Theta Eta Chapter History

Local Founding: April 9, 1994 as the Theta Eta Chapter
History: (As taken from a scrapbook in the house)

"Our chapter at Rider College (as it was known at the time) started as an interested group of about 25 women. We were interested in starting something new. We had recruitment parties in the Student Center and bids were given out to interested women. As an interested group we participated in our first Bid Day in that the spring of 1993. At this time we researched many national sororities and limited our choices to Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Phi Sigma Sigma. Each of these three nationals came to Rider and gave a presentation on their sorority. Our unanimous decision was Phi Sigma Sigma. Now all we could do was hope that they wanted us as much as we wanted them. In the spring of 1993, the fax came back that Phi Sigma Sigma would be colonized on the Rider campus.  We immediately worked with the Panhellenic Council and participated in formal rush in the fall of 1993. We took our first new member class of four that fall. Our second class consisted of eight. We were initiated as the Theta Eta chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma on April 9, 1994."

Phi Sigma Sigma National History

National Founding: November 26, 1913 at Hunter College, New York

Motto: â€œDiokete Hupsula" or "Aim High"
Nickname: Phi Sig

History: In 1913, our Founders approached the Dean of Women at Hunter College in New York City with a vision. They wanted to start a sorority that would promote open membership to all women of character regardless of background; a sorority committed to sisterhood, excellence in scholarship, and selfless giving. On November 26, 1913, Phi Sigma Sigma was born. It was the first nonsectarian sorority; the only one that was open to diverse membership from inception and the only one with a ritual that was not based in any one religion. Under the leadership of Fay Chertkoff (our first chapter archon), Alpha Chapter was installed at Hunter College.

Our founders, pictured right, in alphaetical order are: Lillian Gordon Alpern, Ethel Gordon Kraus, Josephine Ellison Breakstone, Shirley Cohen Laufer, Fay Chertkoff, Claire Wunder McArdle, Estelle Melnick Cole, Rose Sher Seidman, Jeanette Lipka Furst and Gwen Zaliels Snyder.
